about

Part of a 3" CDR Live Series. Packaged in a transparent sleeve with two printed acetate inserts.

Only 15 copies were made.

GOEM: originated with Frans de Waard in September 1996 when he got hold of a Student Stimulator (a measuring device used in hospitals). After exploring the machine for some time, Roel Meelkop joined him and together they recorded the album 'Stud Stim'. In May 1997 Peter Duimelinks also joined their ranks and they have since recorded and performed extensively in numerous venues, including Barcelona, Berlin and Amsterdam.

"This 3" by Dutch trio Goem is the first release in a series by Glasgow operation Consume. As a label Consume have released a number of CD-Rs by local bands, as an event they have put on a variety of experimental bands from all over - with this 3" series they are presenting some of the live sets from the regular Consume nights. For this first release by Goem, I am pleased to say that I was actually there on the night it was recorded - where the three sat around a table working their collection of gear to produce an enjoyable experience. The CD-R features two tracks over 18 minutes, a fraction of the full set that acts as a nice souvenir for those that were there and a document for those that weren't. Goem start with a solid pulse, hypnotically rhythmic to some degree, an effect that is build on as the track layers with more pulses and digital sound components. To some I guess this is "micro" sound, as a reference to the components at work, but when the result is as dense as this "micro" doesn't really cover it. Flowing well as it turns through evolutionary progressions. The second piece has more of a rumbling feel, impression of tightly bound components almost giving ambient waves. The sound with this piece is close packed molecular detail, a constant kinesis at work within a finely tuned scape. The shifts in the two pieces describing textures as much as tones and sounds, which is where a fair amount of the appeal stems from."
